Definition of Insomnia
Insomnia is the inability to fall asleep, stay asleep or wake too early. The result is daytime sleepiness. Chronic sleep loss can also affect daytime mood and behavior.
Causes of Insomnia
There are many causes of Insomnia. Dr. Gingras will take a thorough history and identify the exact cause for your insomnia. Insomnia can be Acute (lasting less than 1 month) or Chronic (lasting greater than 3 months at least 3 nights/week). Causes of Acute Insomnia can include jet lag, death is the family, loss of a job. Insomnia can also be caused by other problems such as depression and anxiety. Dr. Gingras will review you history to establish the cause of your insomnia.
Diagnosis of Insomnia
Dr. Gingras will take a thorough medical and sleep history, review your medication list, and conduct evaluations as necessary. Dr. Gingras may recommend an overnight sleep study if she suspects an intrinsic disorder of sleep.
Treatment of Insomnia
Treatment depends on the underlying etiology of your insomnia. Insomnia may be treated with lifestyle changes, medications, or a combination of both. Dr. Gingras will determine your treatment after diagnosis.
