What to Expect

Child Sleep Specialist In Charlotte

Sleep is not a LUXURY but a NECESSITY.

Gingras Sleep Medicine staff and providers understand this all too well. Sleep is a complex physiologic process necessary for optimal health, growth, and functioning. Dr. Jeannine Gingras provides complete evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of infant, child, adolescent, adult, and older adult sleep disorders, as well as those particular to women.

Below, we walk you through your or your child’s sleep consultation, sleep study, and follow-up appointments. Find out what you can expect at our sleep medicine centers.

Sleep Consultation

This is the perfect time for you to discuss the sleep concerns that affect you, your spouse, or your child. The consultation is an initial office visit that takes 30-60 minutes.

You will be asked to fill out a questionnaire PRIOR to your visit. It is critically important for you to complete this questionnaire BEFORE your consultation with Dr. Gingras. Not only will you identify sleep concerns, but your answers will provide valuable insight into health and family history that could impact your sleep or that of your spouse or child.

During your consultation, Dr. Gingras will review the questionnaire, ask you to further discuss your concerns, and probe more extensively into sleep and health questions. She will perform a physical exam, review any additional relevant information, discuss possible diagnoses, and formulate a plan of therapy.

If an overnight sleep study is needed to make a diagnosis, the sleep study procedure will be discussed and the sleep study scheduled. Another very important sleep tool is the sleep diary. It is valuable to have this completed for at least 2 weeks prior to your visit, especially if the concern is problems falling or staying asleep.

Dr. Gingras genuinely cares about her patients and their families. She spends time answering questions and communicates recommendations in a timely fashion to your primary healthcare provider and to all consultants involved in your care.

Download, print, and complete your sleep questionnaire and sleep diary on our Patient Forms page before your office visit.

Sleep Studies

Gingras Sleep Medicine’s sleep laboratories offer a private, safe, and comfortable sleep testing facility in a home-like environment. The technologists performing the sleep studies are trained medical professionals certified in sleep technology.

Sleep testing rooms at our sleep labs have comfortable queen-size memory foam beds, TVs, and Wi-Fi. Rooms designated for children have a twin bed or a comfortable memory foam mattress cot for one parent to stay in the room with their child. In some cases, sleep testing for adults can be done at home.

Our sleep testing laboratories are equipped with state-of-the-art computerized video polysomnography equipment and monitors for the detection of apnea and other sleep disorders.

During the study, our our experienced sleep technologist will monitor you and gather data about your brain activity, blood oxygen levels, airflow, heart rate, breathing, eye movements, and muscle movements, as well as gauge how long it takes you to fall asleep. After the study, Dr. Gingras will review and evaluate the data, confirm a diagnosis, and formulate a treatment plan.

Follow-Up Appointments

After your sleep study, you will have a follow-up appointment with Dr. Gingras. At this visit, Dr. Gingras will review the data obtained from the sleep study, summarize the findings, and explain the diagnosis. She will discuss the available options and best plan of treatment.

Once treatment is implemented, you will have periodic follow-up visits to monitor your response to therapy and make any necessary changes.
